Twelve Sites is an on-going research project in which, in our first year in Berlin, we will seek to understand the city through a process of immersion, exploration, investigation and documentation of Berlin’s historical, cultural, social, experiential and architectural context. This sees us record our journey from the uninformed outsider, through to becoming a resident, neighbour, contributor and entity within the city. It allows us to seek to understand the joys, the lows, the opportunities and the challenges of Berlin and how this might begin to inform our contextual approach to architecture. As part of this process of tentative and gradual understanding, we carry out architectural studies of 12 sites in the 12 districts of Berlin over the 12 month period of the research study. For each of the 12 sites we choose one of 12 different typologies. The selection of the sites and the typologies in themselves is determined through the process of our discovery and learning. Our findings and studies will culminate in an exhibition.
