Twelve Sites is an on-going research project which commenced upon the opening of our Berlin office in 2019. The study has sought to understand the city through a process of immersion, exploration, investigation and documentation of Berlin’s historical, cultural, social, experiential and architectural context. It has seen us record our journey from the uninformed outsider, through to becoming a resident, neighbour, contributor and entity within the city. It has allowed us to seek to understand the joys, the lows, the opportunities and the challenges of Berlin and how this might begin to inform our contextual approach to architecture. As part of this process of tentative and gradual understanding, we are carrying out architectural studies of 12 sites in the 12 districts of Berlin. For each of the 12 sites we have chosen one of 12 different typologies. The selection of the sites and the typologies in themselves have been determined through the process of our discovery and learning. Our findings and studies will culminate in an exhibition.
