Laura Smith

BA Hons, MArch

Architectural Assistant Part II

Laura joined Hutchinson & Partners London office in January 2023, after completing her master’s degree at the School of Architecture, Oxford Brookes University. Specialising in Advanced Architectural design, Laura’s thesis project examined how textural dynamics can enhance existing architecture to create immersive experiences. With the Bodleian Library, Oxford, as her subject, her research explored how through projecting developed patterns onto the structure, using kaleidoscopic illumination, dynamic tension could be created between old and new elements of the building. Her master’s degree studies also covered neutral spaces and examining the political agendas within an architectural design project.

She obtained her undergraduate degree from the University of Hertfordshire in 2020, with First Class Honours. She was fortunate to have her final year project nominated for the University of Hertfordshire RIBA Student Award, the RIBA Presidents Medal and the Architectural Journal Student Prize. During this time Laura was also able to gain valuable workplace experience through internships at Studio Schubert and Wilmott Dixon. She also had the opportunity to participate in the London Festival of Architecture and the Festival of Ideas Reimagined in 2020.
