Hutchinson & Partners’ proposals to revive the town centre of Letchworth Garden City have been included within the NLA Future Streets’ research and exhibition. This ongoing research project seeks to provide a comprehensive and sustainable approach to addressing the need for housing, the need to revive our ailing town centres and the need to reduce dependency on non-sustainable modes of transport.

These proposals comes out of a response to an RIBA competition brief that called for the development of 900 new homes and a new school on a site located in the green belt of Letchworth’s periphery to fulfil a demand for predominantly one and two bedroom homes. Our proposals questioned the appropriateness of the brief in an age that requires sustainable urbanism.

The exhibition looks at the past, present and future of London’s streets, analysing the current landscape of innovation in mobility technologies, transport policies and urban planning approaches. It presents future scenarios and provokes thinking about what kind of city we want to inhabit and what role technology should play in realising that view. The exhibition commences on the 14th of November at the NLA’s home in Store Street.
