Hutchinson & Partners are thrilled to be taking part in this year’s Gingerbread City in collaboration with The Museum of Architecture. The exhibition will be held at the 6-7 Motcomb Street, Belgravia, and will be on show for a month over the festive period.
The Gingerbread City is an annual exhibition where architects, designers and engineers create an entire city made of gingerbread. The aim of the exhibition is to connect the public with architecture through an innovative display designed for the holiday season. The exhibition raises money to support the Museum of Architecture as a charity and helps to create programming, exhibitions and events.
Our entry ‘Tiramasu Tower’ is a 16 storey framed structure that responds to the narrative of the brief set by the Museum of Architecture, to imagine the re-use and re-wilding of a former office building. Square in plan, the simple tower form is composed of gingerbread floor plates, with piped detail, supported by reinforced polo mint columns and a brightly lit central core, crowned by a chocolate biscuit Christmas Tree. Every other level has been punched through to form double height spaces with each appropriated by a programme of distinct and different events and activities offering its inhabitants a veritable cornucopia of biscuity goodness and jam-filled fun. Picnic parks, playgrounds, sweet maker spaces, bee hives and juice bars sit atop of each other, filling the building with the sound of laughter, and the heady smell of fresh bakes. The landscape that surrounds the building has been similarly transformed with a sweeping orchard of meringue trees and jelly bushes, scattered with sponge finger benches and coffee whip stands.
Our Gingerbread building will be one of over 100 entries that makes up this year’s Gingerbread City Exhibition with entries from a host of architectural practices including Foster + Partners, Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates, Haworth Tomkins and others.
Opening Dates: 4th December. 2021 – 9th January, 2022
